In 1765, the city and the countryside were still strictly separated by a wall, which served less as a protective fortification and more as a way to delineate the area subject to the toll.

A trader with his goods, transported for him by a three-horse carriage. The city of Munich is clearly visible in the background, with the bridge over the Isar. Anyone who crossed this bridge would have had to stop at the toll house, without exception.

Introduction to the Toll and Excise Ordinance. The Bavarian Prince-Elector is very proud of the fact that he has significantly reduced (sic!) the number of toll houses.
